Victim Support Services and Ministry of Justice Collaborate on Gender-Based Violence Sensitivity Training for Justice Workers
The Honorable Minister of Justice, Mr. Lyndon Lewis, met with Director of Victim Support Services (VSS), Cassandra Richardson, and Inspector and Team Leader Patricia Richardson, to discuss the implementation of gender-based violence (GBV) sensitivity training for justice workers. The meeting marks a significant step forward in strengthening the justice system's response to gender-based violence in St. Maarten.
Inspector Patricia Richardson highlighted the importance of this initiative, recalling that "there had already been an initial info session and workshop training with KPSM officers conducted by Ms. Richardson before she assumed the role of Director of Victim Support Services." She further explained, "GBV training is a key component of the domestic violence protocol created for the KPSM, and officers have tremendously benefited from the sessions in the past."
Inspector Richardson also revealed that a formal protocol is being developed under the guidance of the Prosecutor's Office, the Chief of Police, Mr. Carl John, and the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Delano Baptist, Head of The Detective Department. This protocol is expected to have a positive impact on the entire community.
The meeting also focused on the importance of engaging other justice sectors in GBV training, including prison workers, immigration officers, border protection personnel, and customs officers. These trainings will not only educate justice workers about GBV but will also inform them about the critical role of Victim Support Services in assisting victims.
Additionally, the discussion included plans for VSS to provide support to inmates who have been victimized within the prison system. On the topic of GBV, Ms. Cassandra Richardson emphasized that the training and awareness-building efforts extend beyond addressing the dynamics between men and women. "GBV education also builds awareness and understanding to prevent hate crimes towards individuals who identify as LGBTQI+," she stated, "as these crimes are also rooted in gender inequality and gender-based violence."
Minister Lewis expressed his full support for the initiative, stating, "I am in total agreement that this is being done. This needs to be done with all officers within justice, and the project has my full support."
The GBV sensitivity trainings are scheduled to commence in October and November of this year, marking a significant advancement in the Ministry of Justice's commitment to addressing gender-based violence and promoting equality within the justice system.
