SXM Interscholastic Run on the Boardwalk Gelateria in Philipsburg
Dear School Principals, Gym Teachers, Coaches, and Teachers,
On behalf of the St. Maarten Road Runners Association, we would like to invite you to the 5th annual SXM Interscholastic Run on the Boardwalk Gelateria in Philipsburg on Sunday 19th March 2023.
This event was a huge success in 2016 and 2021, March 2022 & October 2022 when it was last hosted with more than 16 schools competing from both sides of the island. With Covid-19 having impacted sports within schools in a huge way over the last years, we are excited to involve our youth in a healthy & outdoor activity that will improve comradery and give the students an opportunity to show some school pride.
The run will consist of two categories; Primary School and High School (13-15 years and 16-18 years).
The Primary School runners can range in age from 6 to 12 and will complete a 2.5 km distance which is 2 laps marked on the Boardwalk. Their start is at 5:00 pm at Gelateria Milano.
The High School runners will range in age from 13 to 18 and will complete a 5 km distance which is 4 laps marked on the Boardwalk. They will start at 4:00 pm at Gelateria Milano.
The venue is at the Gelateria Milano, different than last year, on the EAST end of the
Boardwalk and the route will take the runners towards the Walter Plantz on the West end of the Boardwalk where they will turn and come back. The High School runners will do this loop a few times to create 5 km.
Race Rules & Information:
- The minimum number of runners per team is 3 and the maximum is 5.
- Each school can register one team in each category.
- If a school does not have the minimum required three runners, they can combine with another school and share the prize and the glory.
- All runners must be students at the school they are representing (run in your school sports shirt).
- The first three runners of each team to cross the line will have their times combined to classify them for the overall position (more runners per team can participate).
- Every runner will receive a finish time, but the top three of the team will be the times that are counted.
- There will be a water stop along the course.
- Each team must include at least one of the opposite sex. So, a team cannot consist of five boys or five girls. If a team has only the minimum required three runners, they must include one of the opposite sexes.
- There will be a prize for the top three teams from each category as well as a monetary donation to the winning teams’ school gym program.
You can register your school's team online via the Facebook event: SXM Interscholastic Run March 2023 or by calling Tri-Sport at +1-721-5454384 or Krispijn Teunissen at 1-721-5531918
We encourage you to start a simple training program to prepare your runners for the required distance. If you need any help or advice on how to get started, we would be happy to send a coach from the various running clubs to assist. Road Runners also do weekly training every Wednesday at 6:00 pm in Raoul Illidge stadium.
