4th edition of the Sint Maarten Youth Parliament’s Annual Interscholastic Debate Competition
Saturday October 22, 2022, saw the launch of the Fourth edition of the Sint Maarten Youth Parliament’s Annual Interscholastic Debate Competition, under the theme Mental Health and Education. Before a packed audience at the Rupert I Maynard Youth Community Center, the Milton Peters College effectively defended the moot: Students do not have enough time to eat a proper nutritious meal during school hours, defeating defending champion St. Dominic High School. Both teams presented very convincing arguments. However, team MPC secured the victory with 912 points to St. Dominic’s 803 points, thanks to a very strong rebuttal from Waby Faustin.
Radiah Matthew, second speaker for the Milton Peters College, was judged Best Speaker for the evening with 357 points. Adio Williams, first speaker for St. Dominic High, was a close second with 354 points.
The competition continues on Saturday October 29 at 6 pm when Learning Unlimited Preparatory School will defend the moot - All Students have the right to confidentiality – against the St. Dominic High School.
This year, the Sint Maarten Youth Parliament platform wants to ensure that all the youth are represented in a topic that has been deemed taboo in our society. Youth Parliament hopes that these debates can help aid the much needed conversation within our community.
