Start of Self Defense Training

Women’s Basic Self-defense training pilot project hosted by Women’s Desk a section within Community Development, Family & Humanitarian Affairs got off to a successful start on Thursday, November 3rd under the theme your Defense is your best Defense. The activity commenced with an introductory session. Participants were introduced to the trainers and given an overview of the training expectation of participants and the training.

The Women’s Basic Self-Defense training is a 2-part pilot project and one of the activities done by the Dept. in observation of the United Nations 16 days of activism for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls. The project consists of community awareness of the importance of Basic Self Defense, giving tips to the community by way of the production of awareness videos and physical training.

The training is a certified training and runs for three months, 2x per week at the Gaston Boasman Help Desk for the Elderly & Disabled and Women’s Desk. The project offered 15 spots to women between the ages of 18 -59, the residence of Dutch Sint Maarten with valid Identification & Health Insurance. Prior to starting the training participants had to enter into an agreement committing to the project. They will be evaluated periodically, have to complete an examination at the end, and have an attendance rate of no less than 80%This project will ascertain

At the official kick-off of the physical training on Tuesday, Nov 08th CDFHA Dept. Head Mrs. Chantale George-Groeneveldt, thanked participants for the important step they took in signing up to participate in a training of this kind. They were encouraged to stay committed and stick with the project despite, the challenges that may come.

Many benefits can be derived from this project; women will have the basic skills and techniques to respond in a threatening situation, build strength, and have the opportunity to get moving.

This project is done in collaboration with the Sint Maarten High Education & Performance Institute.
