Council of Ministers requests the community to join in the commemoration of the 35th Anniversary of Flag Day

On June 13th, 2020 the people and the Government of Sint Maarten will be commemorating the 35th Anniversary of 'Flag Day'. The Government of Sint Maarten will be organizing two official events to mark this special day. During the early hours of June 13th at 6:00 am, the Council of Ministers along with invited dignitaries will attend the 35th Anniversary Sint Maarten Flag Day Ceremony in front of the Government Administration Building in Philipsburg. Due to the existing social distancing protocols as a response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, only invited guests will be asked to attend this event. Some of the main highlights of this event will be the raising of the Sint Maarten Flag along with key cultural performances. Later in the afternoon, the Council of Ministers are calling on the entire community to show its solidarity and gratitude towards the front-liners, emergency responders, and all individuals who in one way or another contributed to the successful containment and response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Persons are asked to come out in large numbers on the roadsides within their neighborhoods to express their gratitude and wave the Sint Maarten Flag as the 'Flag Day Thank You Motorcade' makes its way through the districts of Sint Maarten starting at 2:00 pm at Soualiga Boulevard on June 13th. Additional details of the route and vehicles that can join the motorcade will be shared in a follow-up press release later this week. This, June 13th will mark 35 years since the Sint Maarten flag was designed by Roselle Richardson, presented by Dr. Claude Wathey, approved and established by the then sitting members of Island Council on June 13th, 1985. Today, the Sint Maarten Flag remains an intricate part of the fabric of our Historical and Cultural heritage. In the days leading up to the commemoration activities on June 13th, persons and businesses in the community are also asked to show their pride and patriotism by flying the Sint Maarten flag on vehicles and buildings or wherever they deem it appropriate.
